Sask. ranch to host study seeing if horses can help first responders manage PTSD symptoms

A horse ranch in the Prince Albert area will host a research study to determine whether or not horses can help public safety personnel manage symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Cartier Farms partnered with Ontario-based McMaster University to see if Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) will help improve symptoms for first responders with PTSD.

TED Talks: Aerospace executive talks new tools to help fight wildfires from space

Former aerospace executive George Whitesides has ideas for bringing new tools to combat the risk of mega fires — wildfire conflagrations greater than 40,000 hectares that are happening with increasing frequency. Those tools include better satellites and more terrestrial remote sensing technologies for firefighters to use in decision making, which Whitesides touched on during a presentation at the TED Talks conference Wednesday in Vancouver.

Midland Fire’s response time ‘putting the community at risk

When it comes to fire response, precious minutes save lives. Midland council were reminded of that recently. A long-awaited 10-year fire master plan for the town was presented at a recent regular meeting of Midland council, with some details being eye-openers for the new term of council.

First firefighting camp for girls coming to Kingston

A group of female firefighters from Kingston and surrounding areas are bringing a free firefighting camp for girls to Kingston this July. The camp is offered by Women in Fire YGK in partnership with Kingston Fire and Rescue, and will be open to those who identify as a girl aged 15-18.

To understand what motivates people to evacuate, researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) surveyed affected residents.
