N.B. fire chiefs seek fix to ‘dangerous’ medical dispatch change

Several fire departments in southeastern New Brunswick are continuing to raise the alarm over an unexpected change to the dispatch system for medical emergencies. In some cases, fire departments that were once sent to life-threatening emergencies are no longer being notified. Other departments, worried about missing serious calls, have opted to answer everything — even if they’re minor, such as for broken bones.

Forest fires force thousands out of their homes in Quebec’s North Shore

With the number of out-of-control forest fires across Quebec having quickly multiplied, the city of Sept-Îles on the province’s North Shore has declared a local state of emergency and has put in place a mandatory evacuation order for several neighbourhoods. The evacuation order affects about 5,000 residents in the region. Do you maintain your TI?

Training firefighters in how to effectively use thermal imaging (TI) technology is extremely rewarding. During these trainings, I ask to use the department’s TI to help me teach the class about the benefits of thermal imaging. This gives me an opportunity to examine it. Often, I am handed a TI that needs at least a good wipe down. Sometimes there is a TI that is so filthy that it requires a considerable amount of time to get it back to its original condition. Lingo and logistics

Current interagency communication techniques are like a step stool in your tool kit, infrequently used, but important and helpful when the time comes. Managing our thoughts

Our last stop on why the philosophy of Stoicism and cognitive behavioural therapy are good approaches for resilience lies with our thoughts. This is purposeful — often thoughts are the first place people wish to look when trying to address mental health and other problems in their personal life. For me to hear, “if only I could stop thinking about…” is almost a guarantee. By Nick Halmasy » Read more...
