B.C. city approves $15K to buy body armour for firefighters

An increase in threats and violence has left Mission Fire Rescue Service in B.C. searching for an extra layer of protection. The City of Mission council unanimously approved $15,000 to purchase body armour for firefighters at its Nov. 6 meeting.


Nova Scotia enhances mental health support for volunteer firefighters, ground search and rescue

Nova Scotia’s volunteer firefighters and ground search and rescue teams are getting access to more mental health support. The new Nova Scotia Firefighter and Ground Search and Rescue Volunteer Assistance Program is expected to give first responders and their families access to personal and family counselling, stress management, nutrition support and more.


Ontario expands esophageal cancer coverage for firefighters

Ontario is improving cancer coverage for firefighters and fire investigators by lowering the duration of employment needed to receive presumed (automatic) compensation prior to diagnosis with esophageal cancer from 25 to 15 years.


Alberta Wildfire adds nighttime helicopter to wildfire fighting arsenal

Alberta Wildfire is using a new tool that it hopes will give it an upper hand when fighting wildfires: a nighttime wildfire fighting helicopter. The helicopter was used on several fires during the 2023 wildfire season, including ones burning near Little Red River Cree Nation, Edson and East Prairie Metis Settlement, to assist with dropping water on fires, reconnaissance and moving personnel.
