‘Unsafe’ homeless encampments must come down: Edmonton fire chief

While Edmonton’s fire chief acknowledges homeless encampments are a complex issue, he says they are dangerous and ultimately need to come down. In a year-end interview with CityNews, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services Chief Joe Zatylny says he’s worried about the growing threat of fires at homeless camps.


Thunder Bay fire chief retires

After 32-plus years in the fire service, Thunder Bay Fire Chief Greg Hankkio is saying goodbye to public service. City staff unveiled the news during Monday night’s city council meeting, with Hankkio confirming that his last day on the job will be Jan. 31.

Firefighters in Hamilton have laid charges against two tenants who survived a fire that killed four others at a townhouse nearly one year ago after an investigation found that smoke alarms in the unit had been disabled.


E-bike fire on Toronto subway sends 1 hospital

A man has been taken to hospital in serious condition after his e-bike caught on fire aboard a subway train in Toronto Sunday afternoon, according to police. Just after 3 p.m., police said crews were responding to a working fire on a train at Sheppard-Yonge Station in North York.
