Last year's record wildfires in Alberta destroyed habitat for threatened species and will change the makeup of the province's forests for decades to come, says a new report. And the assessment from the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute — a body funded by the University of Alberta and a provincial research agency — says the chance of a repeat of 2023's massive burn poses an ongoing challenge for both conservation and industry.

A global forest study says Canadian wildfires last year were “entirely” to blame for a worldwide surge in tree losses. The study released by researchers at the University of Maryland on the Global Forest Watch website says tree cover loss in 2023 reached 28.3 million hectares globally, a 24 per cent jump driven by Canada’s loss of 8.6 million hectares last year.

British Columbia’s premier says a training and education centre for wildfire fighters will be established in response to recommendations by a task force that looked into last year’s catastrophic wildfires. David Eby says the centre at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops will be the first of its kind in North America, offering everything from basic wildfire training to post-doctoral research.

Firefighting strategies used in the wildland and WUI environment are much different than those used in structural firefighting and require unique knowledge and skills. This new series from Action Training Systems presents important information for the structural firefighter who may be called upon to provide support or respond to wildland or wildland-urban interface fire in their jurisdiction.
This series can assist fire service agencies and members with meeting the training requirements of NFPA 1051 and 1143.
