The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) and the Cree Nation are partnering to launch the Fire Prevention Officer (FPO) Mentorship Program, bringing together fire services from across Ontario and the Cre Nation communities of northern Quebec. The FPO Mentorship Program is the first of its kind in Canada and will see 10 FPOs from the Cree Nations of northern Quebec traveling to southern Ontario to work in conjunction with 11 fire departments, gaining experience to establish their own programs at home.

Developed in consultation with building officials, fire prevention officers, architects, engineers, builders and the construction industry, the NEW 2024 Building Code Compendium increases harmonization with the National Construction Codes to streamline processes by eliminating technical variations between the provincial and national requirements. The 2024 Building Code comes into effect on January 1, 2025, with a three-month grace period until March 31, 2025 for certain designs that are already underway.

Chimney fires usually happen in the fall and spring. In the fall, chimneys don’t get hot enough to burn off the creosote because people are just trying to warm up, not heat the whole house. In the spring it’s a similar story, but by that time, most of the good firewood is gone, and people start burning whatever they can find in the woodshed. The terms chimney and flue are used interchangeably in many jurisdictions; however, they do not mean the same thing.
