The New Handtmann ConPro Sachet system packages fluid or pasty food products and food supplements in small sachet packaging. The system uses seaweed-based material instead of plastic film so the sachets can be ingested or disposed of in organic waste after use because they biodegrade within a few weeks. The co-extruding technologies makes this possible for these edible sachets.

Health Canada is considering developing a mandatory packaging program. It is also concerned with the use of recycled plastic in food packaging due to a lack of data. These were a few takeaways from a Food Plastics and Packaging Consultation organized by Food and Beverage Ontario where F&B processors, retailers, packaging firms, municipal waste teams, government representatives and other sector stakeholders engaged in an open discussion about challenges with food packaging, and keeping plastics out of landfills.

The Canadian Food Innovation Network awards $386,078 to four foodtech projects through the organization’s Innovation Booster Program. Industry will match these funds to create projects valued at $772,154. The Innovation Booster funding recipients are ThisFish, Knead Technologies, Skygauge Robotics, and Local Line.

Protein Industries Canada is investing in a new project with Roquette, Prairie Fava, BioNeutra and Plant Up to improve efficiencies, develop new ingredients and food products, and explore new markets for co-products. More than $24 million will be invested into the project, with the partners investing $13.7 million and Protein Industries Canada investing the remaining $10.7 million.
