The mental health of farmers is worse than it was five years ago and worse than that of the general population in almost every way, according to a new survey from University of Guelph researchers. Stress, anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion and cynicism, suicide ideation and lowered resilience were all higher among farmers than the national average, the team found.

In 2011, AAFC scientists were researching ways to control European corn borer populations and developed the “potato vine crusher.” The equipment successfully reduced ECB populations in a field, but the pest’s ability to fly meant the crusher went unused for a decade until one AAFC research scientist considered another use for it: weed seedbank control.
