AAFC-Charlottetown researchers Jason McCallum and Aaron Mills are part of a team of AAFC researchers who have been adapting Maritime-grown wild hops into craft beer. Considering tha commercial hop varieties can be such a struggle to grow led the two to expand their research into how well wild hops would perform in a commercial setting, known as a “hopyard.”

Mary Ruth McDonald has always been interested in plants, which led her to the University of Guelph and the study of plant pathology. But it was a summer job as a pest management scout in Ontario’s Holland Marsh that clarified what she wanted to do.
