The maritime provinces experienced higher-than-normal amounts of rainfall in the summer of 2023. Not only were there high amounts; there were also heavy downpours, resulting in erosion, increased leaching and runoff and flooding in some areas. However, prior to these heavy rains, there was very little rainfall in the spring, which caused some drought-like conditions. With bloom beginning in the earliest regions of the province, risk of blossom infection in now possible. As such, OMAFRA has made its fire blight prediction maps available for the 2024 growing season. Since 2023, OMAFRA has partnered with WeatherSource to provide OnPoint Weather, a mapping service that provides growers with the current seven-day predicted risk of fire blight infection for various regions in southwestern Ontario. The mapping is based on the Cougar Blight model. Four different maps are available to assess your risk for fire blight in your pears or apples.
