The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has extended the compliance timelines for updating grades and labels for greenhouse miniature seedless cucumbers and greenhouse long seedless cucumbers. Regulated parties had until January 6, 2024 to bring labels and advertising into compliance.

The federal government has changed the requirements for hiring temporary foreign workers. At the start of 2022, minimum advertising requirements are no longer a prerequisite for agricultural workers. An archive of the Ministry’s webpage shows the rules were initially laxed until June 2023, but the webpage now shows it’s been extended by a year.

Late last year, the Nipissing First Nation purchased a specialized hydroponic "farm" built in a steel box about the size of a shipping container. The farm now produces enough fresh greens for the community of about 3,000 and nearby restaurants year-round.

With the new year comes new opportunity and I am excited to see how the next 12 months roll out. As we get into the busier season for our readership, there’s a lot of optimism about what 2024 has in store for greenhouse growers across the country. There’s no escaping the fact, however, that there are still some significant challenges the sector is facing down. Inflation, interest rates, climate change, geopolitical conflict, and energy are just a small fraction of the issues growers are forced to confront in their operations.

For an industry that aims to have precise control over the products it produces, it is greatly susceptible to a number of social, economic, environmental and even geopolitical forces that are entirely uncontrollable. The way in which growers produce is becoming increasingly sophisticated, streamlined and sustainable but the rising cost of inputs – energy, labour, packaging, trucking, etc – continues to climb as a result of these outside pressures.
