Let's hope the rate cut turns around those building permit numbers and supports the substantial money Ontario will be throwing at infrastructure. But one thing's for sure: Mike Bomok isn't going to have to worry about any of it.

The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) invites the public to participate in its next review of proposed changes to the 2020 editions of the National Model Codes. The public review will run from October 21 to December 19, 2024. Those interested in participating in the review can access the proposed changes on the CBHCC’s website and provide feedback. The public review is an opportunity for all Canadians to participate in the code development process.

The Ontario Construction Secretariat has an excellent overview of the highlights in the Ontario fall economic statement in its latest Stay Connected newsletter: Ontario’s Minister of Finance, Peter Bethlenfalvy, released the 2024 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review, titled, Building Ontario for You. The Ontario Government is investing in a multitude of industries and building infrastructure across the province. These investments combined with industry forecasting suggest busy upcoming years for Ontario’s unionized ICI construction industry.

The Bank of Canada has reduced its target for the overnight rate to 3¾ percent, with the Bank Rate at four percent and the deposit rate at 3¾ percent. The Bank is continuing its policy of balance sheet normalization. The Bank continues to expect the global economy to expand at a rate of about 3 percent over the next two years. Growth in the United States is now expected to be stronger than previously forecast while the outlook for China remains subdued.

Statistics Canada, The Daily, has released its data on building permits for August 2024. The total value of building permits in Canada decreased by $858.1 million to $11.5 billion in August, following a strong July during which construction intentions rose sharply. The residential and non-residential sectors contributed to the decrease in August. On a constant dollar basis, the total value of building permits decreased by 7.6 percent in August. The non-residential sector declines in all three components despite sustained industrial permit levels.
