New research facility studies fish stress caused by climate change

University of Waterloo in southern Ontario is opening a new research facility to research aquatic stressors that could impact the future of aquaculture. The new Waterloo Aquatic Threats in Environmental Research (WATER) facility aims to simulate and research threats to prepare the aquaculture industry to prevent current and future problems.


Water treatment tech cuts down nitrites in RAS

The technical team at NaturalShrimp Inc., reported that the company’s patented electrocoagulation (EC) water treatment technology is able to reduce nitrites in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) without the use of biofilters. Such a technology can cut instances of nitrite buildup in biofilters, which can be bad for fish health.


Benchmark and Cermaq receive funding for vaccine development

Benchmark Animal Health and Cermaq Group AS have received NOK 4.2 million (approx. USD $4.8 million) in funding from the Research Council of Norway, to put toward a partnered research project to develop a vaccine against salmon diseases caused by Tenacibaculum bacteria.

Nuclear plants in Russia and Ukraine keep breeding fish

Nuclear plants in post-Soviet space keep using fish in cooling ponds, expanding its number and range in order to maintain a sustainable operation. Just recently, the management of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear plant in Ukraine announced plans to release 202,000 units of carp fry in its cooling pond to reduce biological interference in the operation of circulation systems.
