Located Sacramento County, Calif., Nimbus Hatchery raises Chinook salmon and steelhead for release to the American River. Built by the USBR in 1955 and operated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), the purpose of the hatchery program is to mitigate for salmon and steelhead spawning and rearing habitat eliminated due to construction of Nimbus Dam and, secondarily, to support in-river and ocean fisheries. Annual production targets are to release four million fall-run Chinook salmon smolts and 430,000 American River steelhead yearlings.
