A NOAA Fisheries study has shown that genetics enable earlier detection of a lethal disease in Tanner and snow crabs. Scientists used sensitive genetic detection methods to examine crabs collected during the NOAA Fisheries annual bottom trawl survey in the eastern Bering Sea from 2015 to 2017 and estimated the annual prevalence of bitter crab disease.

In September 2024, the Associated Press (with financial support from The Walton Family Foundation, of Walmart fame) published an important (and perhaps unprecedented) report that looked at three large Asian players in the industry: India, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Oysters don’t have any kind of adaptive immunity. Unlike vertebrates that have a defence mechanism which can remember and destroy disease-causing substances, if oysters can’t fight off infection and they get re-infected another time, it’s a whole new infection for them.
