Editor's Note

We cannot underestimate the effects of climate change on ecosystems. And in California, some fish hatcheries have faced temporary closures as a result. Upgrading these hatcheries to improve functionality is imperative.

California to upgrade 21 fish hatcheries to combat climate impacts

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is upgrading 21 fish hatcheries to boost the state’s salmon and trout populations.

Omega-3-rich diet boosts salmon survival, study finds

A Norwegian study has shown that higher levels of Omega-3 EPA & DHA in Atlantic salmon diets improve survival, feed performance and quality. Veramaris, a producer of Omega-3 fatty acids, collaborated with Manolin, an aquaculture data management company, to provide proof of the dietary EPA & DHA benefits for aquaculture.

Lake Champlain lake trout stocking to end as wild populations thrive

A lake trout stocking program will stop after this spring because wild populations in Lake Champlain no longer need augmenting by hatchery-reared fish. This was achieved through decades of work by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Building an Alaskan legacy

Much like the life cycle of Alaska’s salmon, the state’s oldest operating salmon hatchery that began life as a two-year aquaculture and fisheries science program in 1972 at Sitka’s Sheldon Jackson College, has evolved into what is now the Sitka Sound Science Center (SSSC). It is the only aquaculture educational facility of its scope in Alaska. » Read More...

Snow Lakes or bust

Eighteen miles of hiking in the mountains with 5,000 feet of elevation gain in one day – yes, please? When I first learned about the arduous Snow Lakes trek taken by Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery staff, and that they do it every year, multiple times a season, I wanted to know more – not only for the physical challenge, but I was also curious about why they do it. » Read More

The Winterborne legacy

A genetic selection process, launched in 2004 at Houghton Springs Fish Farm in North Dorset, England, has delivered a 51.9 per cent gain in growth performance for the unit’s “forensically selected” rainbow trout strain, known as The Winterborne. » Read More...
