A year-round manure-management plan takes advantage of all the benefits of manure, including increased efficiency, improved soil health and reduced costs, all while protecting the environment.
Make the most out of manure:
- Get your manure tested. Manure is an excellent source of organic matter and is rich in N, P, K and micronutrients.
- Find alternatives to spreading in the wrong place or at the wrong time. Nutrients lost = money lost.
- Invest in new or modified manure application equipment or storage.
- Make a plan. Talk to a Nutrient Management Consultant.
- Sell or share manure with neighbouring farms.
Timing Matters is an Ontario initiative between farm organizations and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, which strives to promote sound manure management and application practices on Ontario farms. The goal is to promote a better understanding of manure's value in nutrient management planning and reduce risks to the environment.
