A new study demonstrates that composting may be a valuable tool for controlling runoff. Wisconsin researchers compared phosphorus runoff losses between two systems: losses following compost application to cropped fields and expected losses from applying manure directly to the fields without composting.

Ontario sustainability specialist Christine Brown asked a few custom applicators what was holding them back from using European technology. Their response? Litter in manure storages. Some custom applicators won’t update to macerators, which can’t chop up debris, because the time and labor lost to plug-ups and clean-outs is too risky.
