Farm accident survivor sheds light on experience

A natural cleaning system

So-called “floating islands” – groups of native wetland plants in the middle of water bodies – are used to decontaminate soil and pull pollutants out of urban wastewater. But now, researchers at Olds College in Alberta are testing to see if those islands have a practical use for livestock farms: cleaning up feedlot runoff. A new, three-stage study looks at how these islands could remove excess nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from contaminated potable water and feedlot runoff water. » Read more...
