On Jan. 30, OMAFRA kicked off its education initiative, Manure Mondays, for a second year. The 2023 iteration began with a presentation on how manure management decisions affect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. OMAFRA’s James Dyck outlined the issue at hand. “When we’re applying manures [to our soils], that’s putting a lot of nitrogen into our soil, which is great – we want that to grow our crops. But unfortunately, some of that nitrogen escapes back into the atmosphere as nitrous oxide.” Dych added that there are “a lot of different relationships” between the various sources of greenhouse gases on the farm. “That’s one of the things we’re trying to manage here.”

Many custom applicators, particularly in the Midwest, know the benefits of drag-hose systems. Drag hoses allow an applicator to apply a large volume of manure and have potential payoff in terms of yield. Glen Arnold, field specialist, manure nutrient systems, and professor with Ohio State University Extension, says these systems are most popular in the Midwest because its ground is favorable to the systems. But despite the niche popularity of drag hoses, which rose to prominence in the Midwest in the 1990s, not all growers know the benefits of applying manure via drag hoses. Arnold discusses the best ways to market and communicate the advantages of such systems, as well as recent advancements.
