PTDA Business Index reveals significant growth for PT/MC Industry in 1Q2016

The PTDA Business Index for 1Q2016 indicates significant growth with a reading of 50.8, a higher reading than 35.7 in 4Q2015 and is the first reading above 50 since 1Q2015. Business activity indicated an increase nearly double that of the previous quarter. Led dominantly by the distributor market, business activity in 1Q2016 increased to 48.3 from 24.6 in the previous quarter. » Read full article

Officials with Nalcor Energy investigating structure collapse at Muskrat Falls

Officials are investigating an industrial accident at the powerhouse at Muskrat Falls in Labrador. A spokesman says the structure supporting concrete that was being poured collapsed. Seven employees were treated on-site and one was sent to hospital. » Read full article

Domtar’s award-winning Windsor mill examines the sources of error

“A worker is tasked to cut some failed bolts on a pressure vessel door. In the process, he cuts his finger and takes five stiches. An investigation determines that this accident was just waiting to happen. In a new approach to understanding the cause of incidents like this, Domtar’s pulp and paper mill in Windsor, Que. is improving its safety programs by adopting a more correct way of understanding the nature of errors. Adapting an approach developed to reduce the number of incidents in the nuclear power industry, called Human Performance Improvement (HPI), the Windsor mill is focusing less on how an incident happens, and more on why.
