Are Canadian women at greater risk due to poorly designed & fitting PPE?
|
|
OHS Canada’s recent PPE for Women forum underlined the challenges women experience with poorly designed and ill-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE).
Released earlier this year, CSA Group’s research report, Canadian Women’s Experiences with Personal Protective Equipment in the Workplace, was a starting point for many of the discussions at the forum.
Through a survey of nearly 3,000 Canadian women, the report found that:
- 85% of women reported being hampered at work by their PPE
- 40% of women reported experiencing an injury or incident related to their ill-fitting PPE
- Only 6% of women said the PPE they wear is designed for them
The report also outlines several factors hindering the development of gender-responsive PPE, from the availability of current and representative anthropometric data to regulations explicitly and purposefully addressing the needs of women in the workplace.
