From 1978 to 1979, Jim Hobbs was one of many miners in northern Ontario who inhaled finely ground aluminum dust known as McIntyre Powder, which was believed to protect them from silicosis. Canisters containing this powder were punctured, and a compressed-air system would send out a thick, black cloud of respirable aluminum dust into specially constructed chambers or change rooms where miners breathed in the dust. During the dispersal process, all ventilation would be halted.
