What is Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)?
FortisBC is working with local farmers, municipalities and industry to produce and deliver carbon neutral RNG for our customers to use in their homes and businesses as an energy source, just like conventional natural gas. It’s part of our 30BY30 plan to reduce our customers’ emissions by 30 per cent by 2030, compared with 2007 levels.

What makes RNG carbon neutral?1
As waste decomposes, it releases gases into the atmosphere. To produce RNG, those same gases are captured (preventing them from entering the atmosphere), then purified and used in our system the same way as conventional natural gas without adding more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Where does RNG come from?
As our RNG supply grows, less conventional gas is used. In 2020, we added a third more RNG compared to the previous year, and we have plans to continue growing that supply.
That’s energy at work.
Ask us how RNG can help buildings meet strict emissions guidelines.

1Renewable Natural Gas is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create carbon neutral Renewable Natural Gas (also called biomethane).
