BIOLOGICALS 101

Biological products are the area of crop inputs expected to grow most rapidly in the coming years. But what are they?

Syngenta Biologicals are derived from natural elements or inspired by natural processes. They can be used to protect and promote plant growth, and enhance soil health.

Syngenta entered the biologicals market in 2020 with the purchase of Valagro®, a leading company in biostimulants worldwide. In 2021, Syngenta offered a biological product to Canadian growers for the first time.

The Syngenta Biologicals business is just getting started and, with a dedicated team in place, will expand offerings in the years to come.

What’s the difference between biologicals?
There are three categories of biologicals: biocontrol, biostimulant and biofertility products.

SO, WHAT’S AVAILABLE IN 2023?

Biofertility

Envita® Is the leading nitrogen-fixing biological product that turns the entire plant – including leaves and roots – into a nitrogen-fixing powerhouse. Available exclusively from Syngenta in 2023, Envita features the bacteria Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus – a naturally occurring food-grade bacteria that enables a unique mode of nitrogen fixing in a wide variety of crops.

The bacteria form a symbiotic relationship with the host plant, ultimately replicating and spreading through the plant’s cells.

The bacteria then begin fixing nitrogen from the air and continue to do so throughout the season, offering the host plant an alternate source of nitrogen from application through harvest. For a demonstration of how this works, watch this video.

Envita is typically used alongside a conventional fertility program, helping to match nitrogen supply during peak demand.

Testing has been limited in vegetables and fruit, however potato trials completed in 2022 showed a positive return on investment.1

* Yield determined by 4 x 10’ digs in each of the Envita and untreated areas. ** Yield determined by distance to fill a truck at harvest. Individual results may vary.

Choose Envita to help fill the nitrogen gap and ensure this essential nutrient is available in the right place, at the right time – all season long.

Good to know: Because Envita is a living organism, moderate temperatures at the time of application are a critical element for success.

Biostimulant

Megafol® is a liquid foliar fertilizer biostimulant formulated with plant extracts critical to productivity and plant stress response.

A foliar application of Megafol can help the plant respond more efficiently to abiotic stress caused by drought, heat, low temperatures and physical damage.

Megafol is formulated with plant extracts derived from plants that thrive in stressful environments. These components – including vitamins, amino acids, proteins, betaines and biomolecules – are critical in the stress response, vegetative development and productivity in every plant.
