Potato farmers planted planted 347,416 acres of potatoes in 2018, an increase of 0.5 per cent from 2017, according to Statistic Canada’s production update. The largest increase of acres seeded was in Alberta and the largest decrease was in Ontario.

Bob Vernon and his research team realized they could use the wireworm’s food detection system against the pest in a study conducted by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. By taking advantage of the wireworm’s appetite for wheat seed, researchers found that planting insecticide-treated wheat seed nearby can lure wireworms away from potato crops and into their trap.
