A worldwide shortage of potatoes, as a result of a hot dry growing season and wet cold harvest, has the potential to drive up the price for potatoes. The unusually hot dry growing season in Europe also affected the supply of seed potatoes, which will have a domino effect on next year's harvest.

Whether it was too hot or too cold, it was not just right for potatoes this year. Approximately 15,000 acres, representing almost 5 per cent of Canada’s potato acreage, had to be abandoned and will have implications for the potato supply this marketing season. Prince Edward Island makes up almost half of the unharvested acres, while Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta make up the rest.
