Price of potatoes expected to go up

A worldwide shortage of potatoes, as a result of a hot dry growing season and wet cold harvest, has the potential to drive up the price for potatoes. The unusually hot dry growing season in Europe also affected the supply of seed potatoes, which will have a domino effect on next year's harvest.

The fungus currently wreaking havoc on Ontario corn requires large wounds to penetrate tubers and the cut surface of seed pieces can provide an easy entry for the pathogen. Growers planting potatoes after corn are advised to use a seed-piece treatment effective against Fusarium.

Tough potato harvest for Canadian growers

Approximately 15,000 acres, representing almost 5 per cent of Canada’s potato acreage, had to be abandoned and will have implications for the potato supply this marketing season.
