A nighttime blaze on Wednesday, Sept. 15 severely damaged fish tanks at the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility of Atlantic Sapphire in Hvide Sande, Denmark. The Danish aquaculture company reported that all workers at the facility managed to escape to safety without injury and that the fire was under control by 6 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16.

On September 14, RAStech held its second virtual event in its RAS Connector Series: The RAS Roundtable Panels. Viewers tuned in from around the globe to hear industry experts' thoughts on prioritizing fish welfare while designing RAS facilities and technologies; the feed challenges being experienced within the RAS sector, and how they can be mitigated; developing sustainable waste management programs for RAS facilities; and the causes of off-flavour, and how they can be mitigated.

The possibility of your next plate of salad coming from a RAS facility could be a reality sooner than expected, with the latest entrants in the aquaponic research arena being Columbi Salmon, BioMar, the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) and Morefish, all of which are collaborating on a project utilizing 'fish sludge' and water used in the RAS process.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has recently launched a world-wide public consultation campaign aimed at developing new requirements to improve the welfare of farmed fish, which will run from September 1 to October 31, 2021. The requirements will take advantage of new developments and research to cover issues including water quality, stocking density and slaughter, according to the ASC.
