Singapore-based ornamental fish service company Qian Hu Corp. Ltd., has invested $1 million SGD in AquaEasy Pte Ltd., a provider or artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to shrimp farmers. While widely known for providing more than 1,000 species and varieties of ornamental fish and distributing aquarium accessories, Qian Hu has also developed a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) for intensive fish farming. The company’s chief executive office, Yap Kok Cheng, said that partnering with AquaEasy will boost Qian Hu’s capabilities.

Florida-based company Blue Star Foods continues to grow its land-based aquaculture presence with its recent acquisition of a recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) technology firm. Blue Star’s purchase last week of Gault Seafood, LLC is only its second acquisition of a RAS company this year. The 20-year-old Beaufort, South Carolina-based firm Gault Seafood developed a unique RAS technology meant for harvesting Atlantic Blue Crab during the specie’s off-season.

Salmon Evolution’s land-based fish farm in Indre Harøy, Hustadvik will be powered by renewable hydro power when it begins operation in March next year. The facility, which has been billed as Europe’s largest in-shore fish farm, will be getting its electricity from hydro power company Statkraft. The Norwegian energy firm has a hydropower plant at Grytten in Rauma Municipality, just less than 60 kilometers away from Indre Harøy.

Norway-based Proximar Seafood AS, has hired an executive with extensive on-shore salmon farming experience to head its recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) project in Japan. The company recently named Dharma Rajeswaran as chief operating officer. Rajeswaran will officially join Proximar in Jan. 1, 2022. Rajeswaran will be based in Japan where he will continue building the operational team and prepare for Proximar facility’s operational start-up.

Blue Star Foods’ recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) subsidiary, Taste of BC Aquafarms (TBC), has entered into a two-year agreement to supply steelhead salmon fingerlings to another company that produces steelhead salmon in British Columbia (B.C.), Canada for a value of up to approximately $1 million.

A four-year aquaculture research and development (R&D) project to be carried out and led by The Scottish Salmon Company’s (SSC’s) Applecross site in the northwest highlands, has been awarded up to GBP £5 million (about USD $6.6 million) in public sector funding. The R&D project, will focus on post-smolt innovation, with the central goal to increase smolt sizes from around 100g to 500g in an ecologically sustainable manner using recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology.
