Future of Colpoy’s Bay RAS project hinges on environmental analysis

Ongoing aquatic studies and environmental analysis will determine the prospects of Georgian Bay Salmon’s (GBS) planned recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in Wiarton, Ontario’s Colpoy’s Bay. The company, which is a subsidiary of Georgian Bay Innovation Group, announced last month that it plans to build a 500,000 s/f land-based fish farm by the bay just 250 km north of Toronto, which will have the capacity to produce 15,000 tons of Atlantic salmon per year.


Water treatment tech cuts down nitrites in RAS

The technical team at NaturalShrimp Inc., reported that the company’s patented electrocoagulation (EC) water treatment technology is able to reduce nitrites in receirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) without the use of biofilters. Such a technology is said to cut instances of nitrite buildup in biofilters, which can be bad for fish health.


Developing geothermal energy for land-based aquaculture

A Norway-based energy company is proposing the use of geothermal energy as a more sustainable way of operating land-based aquaculture facilities. Rock Energy uses its technology to heat sports arenas, parking facilities, sidewalks, industrial buildings, hospitals, office buildings, hotels, malls, and residential buildings. Now, the company has its eye on the land-based aquaculture industry.

Dallas, Texas-based shrimp producer NaturalShrimp reported that it has secured US $15 million in credit offering and now intends to move forward with plans to expand its shrimp production facilities.
