West Coast Salmon selects PR Aqua as RAS partner for U.S. Atlantic salmon facility

West Coast Salmon (WCS) has announced its recirculating aquaculture (RAS) partner will be PR Aqua of Vancouver, British Columbia (B.C.) in Canada, as the company treks forward in the development of its industrial scale land-based farming facility, which will serve the U.S. West Coast market with sustainably-produced Atlantic salmon.

RAS Talk: Talking aquaponics with Tracy Nazzaro of Traders Hill Farm

Aquaponics is often described as the combination of recirculating aquaculture with hydroponics. Many favour it as the ultimate circular food production system, utilizing waste from the production of fish to be used as nutrients for the production of plants like leafy greens and tomatoes. Currently, there are a few moderate to large aquaponics operations running in the U.S. In this episode of RAS Talk, co-host Brian Vinci, director of the Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute, sat down to talk all things aquaponics with Tracy Nazzaro, principal and president for Traders Hill Farm.

Innovasea welcomes new VP and general manager of its land-based aquaculture group

Innovasea has named Marc Turano its vice president and general manager of its land-based aquaculture group. Turano brings more than 25 years’ experience in the aquaculture industry, and is an expert on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and fish nutrition physiology. Turano also holds a doctorate in zoology from North Carolina State University, and worked at Cargill Inc. for almost five years, where he served as sales director for its seafood business.

Singapore Aquaculture Technologies: Farming fish and data

It’s hard to affix a label on Singapore Aquaculture Technologies. Is it a fish farmer? Is it a technology company? It’s both, says Michael Voigtmann, the company co-founder and chief technical officer. “We started as a fish farmer. And now we’re also a data farmer,” he explains. But that’s getting ahead of the story. How Voigtmann and company co-founder, Dirk Eichelberger, found themselves in aquaculture makes for an interesting narrative. Today, the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) farmers are well placed to help Singapore achieve its goal toward food self-sufficiency. » Read more

Revolutionizing microbial water monitoring

The re-use of water in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) has significant environmental benefits as water consumption is reduced and the water is cleaned. In RAS however, dissolved compounds and fine particulate organic matter are complicated to remove, leading to a high risk of microparticles accumulating in the system, serving as a food source and a reservoir for bacterial colonization. The high risk of concentrating bacteria and have uncontrolled bacterial proliferation in RAS can lead to disease outbreaks and unstable water quality affecting mortality, fish welfare, and performance. » Read more
