Looking to a RAS future: OARC begins construction for new RAS lab

More RAS research is in the works for the Ontario Aquaculture Research Centre (OARC) as it begins construction on its new laboratory in Alma, Ont. in Canada. Previously known as the Alma Research Centre, the OARC was established in 1993 to assist the commercial fish farming industry in Ontario. Research focuses on culture methods, fish health and welfare, behaviour, nutrition, growth, reproduction, and genetics. But as the industry evolves so must the OARC. The new system will provide increased RAS research capacity and add flexibility to research solutions. » Read more

RAS Talk: Talking aquaponics with Tracy Nazzaro of Traders Hill Farm

Aquaponics is often described as the combination of recirculating aquaculture with hydroponics. Many favour it as the ultimate circular food production system, utilizing waste from the production of fish to be used as nutrients for the production of plants like leafy greens and tomatoes. Currently, there are a few moderate to large aquaponics operations running in the U.S. In this episode of RAS Talk, co-host Brian Vinci, director of the Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute, sat down to talk all things aquaponics with Tracy Nazzaro, principal and president for Traders Hill Farm. » Read more

Revolutionizing microbial water monitoring

The re-use of water in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) has significant environmental benefits as water consumption is reduced and the water is cleaned. In RAS however, dissolved compounds and fine particulate organic matter are complicated to remove, leading to a high risk of microparticles accumulating in the system, serving as a food source and a reservoir for bacterial colonization. The high risk of concentrating bacteria and have uncontrolled bacterial proliferation in RAS can lead to disease outbreaks and unstable water quality affecting mortality, fish welfare, and performance. » Read more
