Atlantic Sapphire reports emergency harvest, growing mortality rates

“Due to above normal and increasing mortality in certain systems, fish from these systems have been harvested earlier and at a lower average weight than original,” the company said. Atlantic Sapphire did not say how many fish died but said its harvest expectation of 800,000 to one million fish "remains unchanged."


AquaCon withdraws permit application in Maryland

Plans of Atlantic salmon producer AquaCon to build a land-based fish farm on the eastern shore of Maryland were stymied once more. This time, the aquaculture company has withdrawn is application for a permit to discharge wastewater into the sole waterway that feeds into an area where endangered Atlantic sturgeon spawn.


New Zealand’s first sustainable land-based salmon farm gets $6.7M funding

The New Zealand government announced that it is committing $6.7 million to a prototype of what will be country’s first sustainable land-based salmon farm. The project involved building a sustainable 1000 metric ton hybrid structure that will use a part flow-through system to emulate the unique conditions of the glacial-fed canals.
