Following two years of environmental assessment, land-based aquaculture company GeoSalmo said it secured the approval of the Icelandic National Planning Agency, Skipulagsstofnun. GeoSalmo plans to build a hybrid recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in Þorlákshöfn, near Reykjavik.

Land-based aquaculture newcomer, Atlantis Fish Co., intends to build a US$178 million recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility for raising salmon in a county adjacent to Lake Michigan. In a meeting on May 23 with the Michigan Strategic Fund Board (MSFB), Atlantis Fish Co. said it plans to raise 10,000 salmon per week on 90 acres of property at wastewater site in Muskegon County that the company intends to purchase.

High mortality rates caused by an amoebic gill disease (AGD) outbreak in April at its Indre Harøy land-based facility appear to be under control, according to Salmon Evolution. The company also reported that it has has gradually ramped up production at the site.

I can’t decide whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing that we have so many aquaculture conferences and events in a calendar year. As I’m writing this editorial for the RAS Summer issue, I feel like I’ve just come back from RASTECH 2023 in Orlando, Fla., USA. Of course I am biased, but I think that in-person conferences have an important role to play in driving progress within the industry.
