When it comes to the primary function of the device, processing at the edge offers the benefit of processing uncompressed information. By their nature video surveillance cameras must compress very bandwidth and storage-intensive video across a network for monitoring and storage. In the past when analytics processing was done by a central server, the analytics would be performed on compressed video. Now, when we can perform analytics at the edge, we are benefitting from being able to analyze the full-quality image, which results in better analytics results, and then compressing the video and sending it onward for storage and monitoring. By doing this we can generate more usable and actionable metadata.
