Montreal suburbs may ban pot at sports fields, parks

Although recreational marijuana use becomes legal in Canada on Oct. 17, at least two communities in the Montreal area are taking measures to ban cannabis usage anywhere near sports fields, public parks and other green spaces. The new bylaws would fall under the same laws that prevent cigarette smoking and electronic vaping in such vicinities.


Environmental assessments delaying GTI’s move

The need for additional environmental assessments at the site of the new Guelph Turfgrass Institute has delayed the GTI's move from its current location on Victoria Road. The lease the GTI has at its current location was to expire this year, but the move isn't expected to happen anytime soon until concerns about wildlife dependent upon a drainage pathway is resolved in the area of the Arboretum.


New Walkerton soccer fields already in need of repair

Walkerton, Ont.'s new million-dollar soccer fields are only two years old, but are already in need of upgrades. The one-year warranty on the fields at Bruce Power Regional Soccer Park expired in May of last year. Since then, drainage concerns have come to light as well as irrigation heads protruding from the surface, settling of the fields and severe crowning on two playing surfaces.


Burlington’s Baker named CGSA super of the year

Burlington Golf & Country Club's Dean Baker has been named golf superintendent of the year by award sponsors the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association and Bayer. “Dean Baker is one of the most influential golf course superintendents in Ontario and truly one of the most dedicated members, who instills the importance of involvement and participation in associations,” Kendall Costain, MS and president of the CGSA, said.
