Speaker Spotlight: Hugh Beckie

With the initial discovery of herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds in Western Canada in the late 1980s, HR weeds – most notably wild oat, green foxtail, kochia and cleavers – now affect the majority of annual cropland across the Prairies.

Hugh Beckie, weed scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and professor in the department of agricultural, food and nutritional science at the University of Alberta, will present on the current status of HR weeds in Western Canada at Top Crop Manager’s Herbicide Resistance Summit, being held February 27 and 28, 2018 in Saskatoon, Sask. Beckie will discuss the results of the 2014-2015 Saskatchewan weed resistance survey, the 2016 Manitoba survey, as well as the 2012-2016 test results of samples submitted by producers and industry. Additionally, results from producer questionnaires about the adoption of weed resistance management practices and the costs will be highlighted, providing attendees with the tools and advice needed to defeat HR weeds.
