There are a number of things that can cause poor emergence. Some of these causes are outside of your control, but there are some that you can manage and potentially eliminate. Simple maintenance and equipping your planter or seeder with the right tools will ensure you have even emergence. Check out some solutions to common issues that cause uneven emergence below.
ISSUE: POOR SEED-TO-SOIL CONTACT
Check your disc openers to make sure they are shimmed properly and not worn past the recommended diameter. Add Keeton Seed Firmers to your planter to ensure every seed is pressed to the bottom of the furrow. Make sure you are checking your closing system setting and consider adding FurrowForce to manage your closing performance.
ISSUE: RESIDUE IN THE FURROW
For most planting conditions, a planter should have floating row cleaners to get the residue out of the area where the furrow is created. Combining these with some type of on-the-go adjustment system can give you more control. Precision Planting’s Reveal row cleaner takes residue management to the next level with an internal gauge wheel for even more precision.
ISSUE: INCONSISTENT MOISTURE
Setting the depth on our row units for a target below the moisture line does not always guarantee that the seeds will be planted that deep. Row unit component wear can make depth inconsistent or not the same as what you set. Take the time to calibrate your depth settings or add tools like SmartFirmer and SmartDepth to ensure proper depth of planting.
Set yourself up for success.
Regular maintenance can serve both to ensure a consistent depth and good seed-to-soil contact. Before expecting technology to improve performance, maintenance pitfalls that can cause technology to fail must be fixed.
