How relationship-building supports employee retention

Help keep your operation pointed in the right direction with business planning support from RBC.

Suppose you operate a farm enterprise and have one or two employees whose skill, experience and attitude make them essential to your operation.

What could encourage these ace employees to remain with your business? Alfons Weersink’s advice: why not ask them?

“Try to find out what makes those people tick,” says Weersink, Economics Professor at Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph. “Learn what’s important to them and reward them in that way.”

A higher salary won’t hurt, but Weersink believes many employees want something different, both today and tomorrow.

“There could be aspects of doing the job that they like, and other things they like less,” says Weersink. “Could you assign them more of what they like and less of what they don’t?”

As for the future, it’s good for the employer to understand what the employee is aiming for at work and in life. If they want to own a farm business one day, that could help you too. If you don’t have family members in line for ownership, bringing one or more employees on board can put the farm’s future on a more solid footing.

Ultimately, rewarding employees on their own terms begins with a heart-to-heart conversation.

“Let them know that their efforts are appreciated,” Weersink says. “Ask them where they see themselves in five years. This relationship-building can be time well spent, because everyone likes to feel understood and appreciated.”
