Seed testing to prevent diseases in pulse crops

In 2015, the Regional Pulse Crop Diagnostic Lab in Bozeman, Mo., tested seed submitted for nine fungal species. Results showed a particularly high incidence of Alternaria spp. on pea, plus additional pathogens including botrytis, sclerotinia, Fusarium, and Stemphylium,

This year, pulse crop acreage in Montana increased to more than one million acres, many of which were planted to peas, lentils or chickpea for the first time.

At the 2017 Field Crop Disease Summit, Dr. Mary Burrows of Montana State University will describe how diagnostics, early detection and rapid response to plant diseases will help sustain the industry and provide priorities for education and extension activities.
