Government steps in to help Ontario producers affected by DON

The Ontario and federal government announced steps to help farmers experiencing high levels of DON, including applicable funding to cover a portion of DON-related expenses and temporary storage options to improve grain quality.


Ontario hybrid corn performance trials released for 2018

The Ontario Corn Committee releases the interim report of the 2018 Ontario Hybrid Corn Performance Trials for all areas except Exeter, Ilderton, Woodstock and Belmont, which have yet to report harvest data. Trials were more variable than usual this year so producers are advised to compare averages from several years and locations to better predict a hybrid’s future performance.


Canola oil eligible for heart-healthy claim

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that oils containing a high level of oleic acid, such as high oleic canola oil, can now carry a new qualified health claim. The new claim will appeal to health conscious consumers, with the potential for spillover benefits for producers.
