As part of its grain grading modernization initiative, the Canadian Grain Commission is inviting grain sector stakeholders to provide input on whether falling number and deoxynivalenol should become official grain grading factors. Stakeholders have until May 10, 2019, to provide input.

In addition to hybrid selection, agronomy professor Dr. Tony Vyn also recommends focusing on an incremental approach to the integrated management of nutrients and tillage to achieve bigger kernels of corn.

Intercropping is increasingly practiced by producers in Western Canada, but the industry is still catching up in terms of agronomic resources and research. Recent trials looking into chickpea-flax intercrops have shown flax seeding rate has had the biggest impact of the studied practices and that an intercrop provides an opportunity for producers who hadn’t considered planting chickpea.
