In the U.S. Corn Belt, aggressive producers have now even pushed planting dates into March, aiming for super yields. To reduce the risk of developing herbicide-resistant weeds in a soybean crop, focus on faster canopy closure. That’s one finding from a recently completed Manitoba project that looked at ways to reduce the need for additional in-crop herbicide applications by increasing the crop’s competitiveness with weeds. The project evaluated row spacing, plant density and soybean varieties.

Similar to corn and other crops, controlling weeds early and through the critical weed-free period for soybeans is very important for maximizing yields and crop performance. Although soybeans are quite adaptable, research is showing they are very sensitive to early season weed competition and need all the help they can get until the plants are large enough to crowd out competition.
