Lodging affects oat crops more seriously than any other cereal. A study led by Bao-Luo Ma, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa, examined the effect of nitrogen fertilizer rates on lodging and yields in various oat varieties at sites in Ottawa, Quebec and Saskatchewan. Ma’s team noted that the results were site-specific, so best management practices must consider regional requirements.
