The startling discovery of European corn borers with resistance to a Bt protein called Cry1F in Nova Scotia in 2018 has triggered a major project to tackle the problem. According to Jocelyn Smith, an entomologist at the University of Guelph’s Ridgetown campus, this resistance could jeopardize Ontario’s ability to control the corn borer, with a risk that the resistance could spread to neighbouring provinces or states.

As the only sunflower breeding program in Canada, the Manitoba Crop Alliance’s program is key to the long-term success of the country’s sunflower production. This program, led by breeder Mike Hagen, is just 10 years old, but it already has some very promising hybrids for Prairie growing conditions, including one that is nearing the final stage of pre-commercial field testing.
