Two-spotted spider mites are small – at one fiftieth of an inch in length – but mighty. If conditions are right and they get to work in the early R stages of soybean development, spider mites can cause 40 to 60 per cent yield loss, says Tracey Baute, OMAFRA field crop entomologist. But they’re so small that they can go unnoticed and it’s easy to mistake the symptoms of an infestation for drought.

Soybeans are gaining traction on the Prairies, but where do they fit into crop rotations? In the U.S. Midwest, corn-soybean is standard but has resulted in serious herbicide resistance issues. Earlier crop sequence trials by the University of Manitoba’s Yvonne Lawley showed that corn, wheat or canola preceding soybean produced consistent yields, but yield was lower in a soybean continuous sequence.
