Next-generation seed treatment technology that acts at a nano scale – the scale of genetic material in cells – is in the making at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, Alta. This research, led by scientist John Laurie, is currently developing the technology to target smuts and bunts in cereals, which could reduce the need for broad-spectrum fungicidal seed treatments.

Desiccation is an important management tool for lentil growers, but some desiccants are under scrutiny by consumers and lentil buyers. As a result, researchers at the University of Saskatchewan are looking for alternatives. Neither glyphosate nor glufosinate are recommended for preharvest use in lentil – despite being registered – because some importing countries have lower MRLs.
