Two decades ago, western bean cutworm wasn’t even on producers’ radar in Quebec and Ontario. Since its discovery in 2008-09, it’s become a closely monitored pest of corn and dry bean in both provinces. Every summer, moths travel to Eastern Canada from the U.S. Great Plains region. But western bean cutworms aren’t just travelers: the pest’s overwintering ability was recently confirmed in Quebec.

The drought conditions of 2021 on the Prairies have created concerns about herbicide carryover for the 2022 season. Clark Brenzil, provincial weed control specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, discussed the potential for herbicide carryover at the Top Crop Summit, noting the importance of moisture and time in the breakdown of herbicides in soil.
