With high nitrogen fertilizer prices and increasing environmental pressures to reduce N fertilizer use, crops that fix their own N have the potential to become even more important in our world. N fixation in legumes is a key research interest of Malinda Thilakarathna; some of his recent research results could help soybean breeding programs to improve N fixation in this crop.

It started as a small project led by a University of Manitoba graduate student. Within a few months, the study has gained national attention, with research sites in Ontario and potential partners in B.C. and Quebec. The project looks at the effects of a traditional “Three Sisters” cropping design on ecological systems, from yield to insect communities, including pest and beneficial insect populations.
