Barley breeding has gone high tech – and high speed. The Ottawa barley-breeding program is using cutting-edge technologies such as speed breeding and genomic selection to develop high-yielding barley varieties suited to eastern growing conditions and a range of end-uses, from livestock feed to specialty markets, according to AAFC research scientist Raja Khanal.

Dr. Charles Geddes is a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at Lethbridge, Alta. He leads the weed ecology and cropping systems research program overseeing a diverse range of research. At the Top Crop Summit on Feb. 23, he discussed the challenges of controlling herbicide-resistant kochia in Western Canada.
